OZ-Starring Cody Ch. 5
By Dan

It had been two months since Jessica broke up with Cody. He still remembered it like yesterday, though. He could still see her pointing an accusing finger at him, telling him that he loved the fight more than her, which was true, in a sense. Cody slipped into depression spells frequently, feeling as if he had no one to turn to, and he didn't. Everyone who tried to help him, he pushed away. Guy no longer was his friend, Jessica no longer his girlfriend...

Cody woke up, startled. He wiped his forehead, a little startled that it was cool with sweat. He recently started having wild visions in his sleep, due to the various things that happened to him...and the narcotics abuse. He noticed not too long ago, when he was hurt, someone offered him a type of herb...he knew what it was. Marijuana. It helped him get through his physical pain as he slowly became addicted to the drug, but did nothing for his mental anguish, except help him slip into a gllomier state than he already was... "Whoa...heheh, I know this place...", Cody said mindlessly. He looked to the prison bars. Night. Cody sighed deeply, looking up at the moon which suddenly made it's way through the nighttime haze. "*The moon...so p-p-pretty, just like my darling Je-jes-*" Cody stopped. He forgot her name? No...must be the weed...he suddenly saw an image of her smiling face, and he smiled...

"Jessica..."

Jessica woke up, suddenly aware that the wind was blowing from her slightly open bedroom window. She got up with a sad-sounding sigh, and walked to the window to close it. A quick gust of wind made her tremble under her nightgown. "*It's so quiet here...I think I really miss him...*" Jessica left her room to go downstairs for a glass of water to steady herself. As she made her way down the stairs, she couldn't help but think of how Cody was now... Was he as upset as she? Most likely. Without her even realizing, she was in the kitchen already. As she turned on the sink handle, she could've sworn the blowing winds sounded like the name "Jessica..."

...Or was it her? "*Calm down, Jessica. You're overreacting.*" But was she? She knew in her heart when they had that fateful argument that day which severed their ties for good, she didn't want to say those hurtful things to Cody, and even though Cody wasn't a man heralded for thinking before acting, he didn't mean to say the things he said to her. Jessica suddenly felt a cold rush on her hand, as she realized the glass she obtained from the closet was filled to the brim. Pouring a little out, she went to the living room. Turning off the kitchen light, and turning on the living room overhead lamp, she noticed how incredibly big the place seemed when Cody wasn't around. Cody was always loud when he brought Guy and Haggar over to watch sports, or play pool, or just plain anything. She would scold him playfully about being loud enough to wake the dead, and he'd always tell her that the dead aren't going to wake up, 'cause they're dead. As Jessica sat down in a comfortable leather chair, she retrieved a remote from off the coffee table. Jessica knew what she was going to do would only make her sadder, but she couldn't help it, she missed Cody too much...

She turned on a big CD player, the type that contains about six CD's at once. As she flicked through different CD's, she finally stopped on one, and pressed play...

(Editor's note: This song wouldn't be known by an ordinary black teenaged guy like myself (I might get lynched, or something), but hey, I listen to all music, from KoRn, to DMX, and everything except Hanson)

"So many words, for the broken heart..."
"It's hard to see, in a crimson love..."
"Walk with me..."
"And then, maybe, you will see..."

Jessica began to sniffle softly as the solemn song continued...

"Nights of light, shall soon become..."
"Wild and free...I can feel the sun..."
"Your every wish..."
"Will be done...Now show me..."

"Show me the meaning, of being lonely..."
"Is this the feeling, I need to walk with?"
"Tell me why...I can't be there where you are..."
"There's something missing in my heart..."

Cody suddenly felt something inside him that made his heart wrench inside him. He felt as if Jessica was singing to him... "*How could I have been so stupid to not put down fighting and devote myself to her?*" Cody thought angrily, slamming his fist to the prison wall, ignoring the pain...all he could feel is was the pain of not having Jessica in his life... At this point in the game, Cody couldn't have cared any less about Guy, or Haggar. He just wanted Jessica... He slowly began to mouth the words of a song that he remebered That Jessica loved...

"Life goes on, as it never ends..."
"Eyes of stone, observe the trends..."

Cody began to hum the words. He forgot the next part...

...Jessica was trying to stop herself from crying, but she felt the tears coming fast to her eyes. She missed him too much, words couldn't even comprehend... As she slowly remebered all the good times she shared with Cody, all the romance, all the gifts, all the "I love you's", she finally gave in just as the chorus began again...

Cody was struck with another chord in his heart that seemingly tugged at his soul. He was going to get out of OZ anyway he could, he had to make it up to Jessica for all the unfulfilled promises, all the yelling... Cody remebered how Jessica always took out the time for an "I love you" here, or a quick kiss on the cheek there... and suddenly, with a sob that wouldn't come out of him even if his parents were killed, cody started to cry also, not even knowing that a hundred miles away Jessica was doing the same thing...

"There's nowhere to run, I have no place to go.."
"Surender my heart, body, and soul..."
"How can it be you're asking me to feel..."
"Things you never show......."

Jessica sobbed, whispering "Cody" only once. She left the stereo on, heading back upstairs. As she laid back down into her bed, she fell asleep... Cody, who regained enough composure to realize his fellow inmate in his cell was awake and looking at him as if he were crazy, stopped humming to himself. "What's da' matter with you, man? You need some Mary Jane?", Dale said, yawning in the process.

"No...I'm alright... I think. I'm just thinkin' about my ex, reminiscing, you know."

"Oh yeah, yeah. I gotcha'.", Dale said, returning to sleep. Cody ran a hand through his hair, which he decided to grow a little longer, giving him a even-blonder-than-Ken look. "*I gotta' get my mind off Jessie, but how can I?*", Cody questioned himself. He couldn't answer it at all, so he returned to his bed, and quickly dropped into a dreamless sleep...

...The next morning, Cody was awakened to an uproar like he never heard before!!! "Wha...Dale! What's goin' on?", Cody asked.

"It's a riot! A mother f-ing riot!", he heard Dale say over the continuing blare of the breakout alarm. "Holy s***..." Cody mumbled. He knew it was his time... Could he make it out of the prison? He heard several inmates fighting with the guards as he saw that burly man Bruiser push Eddy E. into Cody's cell door, making it swing open! "*A chance to escape!*", Cody thought, making his way past Eddy E and Bruiser. Eddy E saw Cody get by and attempted to grab him, but Bruiser put him a choke-hold. Cody stumbled upon the hundreds of inmates and guards fighting and yelling, trying to clear a path... "*Will I make it?*", Cody thought. Before he realized it, he heard a "Stop RIGHT THERE!!!!"

...Gulp...
