“I wonder what else could make the treasure,” Meiying spoke aloud.
She, Yun, and Yang were in her room. It was after work, so it was around eight p.m. The boys were sitting cross-legged on her floor, while she lounged on the bed.
“That looks like real gold to me,” Yun commented. “Maybe there will be more just like it…”
“Knock, knock,” came a voice through her bedroom door.
“Um…just a minute!” Meiying called out, stuffing the map and trinket under her pillow.
The door opened, and the three breathed out in relief.
“It’s just you, Chun Li…” Meiying said.
The older woman frowned. “Now that doesn’t sound very encouraging…”
Yun shrugged. “You sounded like a man…we thought you were-OW!”
Yang laughed as his brother rubbed the back of his head, where Chun Li had slapped it.
Meiying held up the necklace. “Look what we found!”
Chun Li sat on the bed, examining the gold pendant. “It’s simple yet beautiful.” She studied the three. “I take it this is from your treasure hunting?”
Yang nodded.
“Okay…” Chun Li faced Meiying. “So how was your date?”
“Aww, come on, Chun Li…” Yun spoke up. “We were here first. Ask her when we leave.”
Chun Li shot him a look. “I want to hear how her date went.”
“But we’re trying to figure out where the next X spot is…” Yun said.
“You guys can do that later,” Chun Li responded. “I ran into Chen today, and he seems very interested in seeing Meiying again.”
Meiying’s eyes lit up. “Really?” At Chun Li’s nod, she squealed with delight. “Oooh! I can’t wait!”
Yun sighed helplessly and glanced at Yang, who shrugged.
“I believe that’s our cue to leave,” Yang said.
As the two walked out, closing the door behind them, Yun grumbled, “This sucks. How are we supposed to find treasure with her drooling over that guy?”
Yang said nothing.
“I say that’s the gallery,” Yun announced.
Several days later, the three friends were gathered at Gen’s house, feeding on Gen’s famous chicken chow mein.
Meiying frowned, staring at the map in front of them. “Which gallery?”
“You know, the gallery,” Yun spoke up. “That famous Chinese artist who uses watercolors and stuff to make landscapes of where he’s visited.”
“Oh yeah…”
Yang studied the map some more. “There’s the children’s theater…” He noticed puppets were drawn on the map. “So…I think Yun might actually be right…The gallery is the only logical place.”
“But why in a gallery?” Meiying asked. “That’s the most unusual…and annoying place to put it. We can’t even touch anything in there…”
“We’re all off today, right?” Yang asked. After the other two nodded, he smiled. “Then let’s go to the gallery and find our treasure.”
Halfway during their walk to the gallery, Meiying cried aloud in surprise.
Yun and Yang turned slowly, seeing that her hand was clapped over her mouth.
“What is it?” Yang asked, a frown forming between his brows.
“I forgot! I was supposed to meet Chen at the park today! We were having a picnic date…”
The brothers glanced at each other.
“Then go see him,” Yang said finally. “Yun and I can find it.”
She appeared doubtful. “Are you sure?”
Yang nodded. “It’s fine.”
“But I want to see what you find…” Meiying trailed off.
“We’ll show you when you get back,” Yun said.
“Sorry…It’s just…ever since I started seeing Chen…we have a lot of last minute dates…”
Yang pushed her in the opposite direction. “Go. Have fun. Just not too much fun,” he gave her a warning look.
She giggled. “Thanks, guys…”
When she was out of sight, Yang sighed. “Barely a week since those two started dating and already she’s becoming forgetful…”
“Jealous?” Yun asked.
“No,” Yang denied.
“Well, I am. This sucks!” Yun exclaimed.
“I know.” Somehow, it didn’t feel the same with their female companion. She was like their sidekick. Batman always had Robin. Ken had Sean. They had Meiying.
“Since we’re already out, we might as well find whatever it is we’re looking for…” Yun reasoned.
“Nothing?!”
Yun and Yang nodded sadly.
“Nothing at all?” Meiying asked.
Hours later, the three had arranged to meet in Yang’s room. Yun and Yang had spent an hour at the gallery, looking through every nook and cranny they could think of.
“But it has to be there!” Meiying exclaimed. “Are you sure you didn’t forget someplace?”
“Look, if you want it so bad, you should have ditched your date and helped us out…as you had originally planned,” Yun added.
Yang shot him a look.
Meiying flinched. “So that’s what this is about, huh?” Her eyes narrowed. “If you didn’t want to tell me about it, then fine!”
“Meiying,” Yang spoke up gently. “We found nothing. We wouldn’t hide anything from you. We-”
“And what about you, Yang?” Meiying spoke up.
“What about me?” he echoed, confused.
“Are you on a jealousy trip, too?”
“I’m not jealous!” Yun responded. “I just don’t like how you’re drooling over the guy.”
“I happen to like this guy a lot. Why can’t you understand that? He’s a nice guy. He’s even taking me sailing tomorrow afternoon,” Meiying informed.
Yang sat up. “I thought we were going rollerblading tomorrow afternoon…”
Meiying stared at him in surprise. “We were?”
Yang sighed. “Yun is working tomorrow afternoon. I asked you last week, and you said okay.”
“I probably forgot,” Meiying explained.
“Your behavior’s changed, Meiying,” Yang said quietly. “We always blade every other Friday afternoons...that’s when we both have that day off…”
“I…I forgot…” Meiying said lamely. She felt so guilty. How could she forget their recreational activity together?
“I’ve never seen you so sprung,” Yun said. “I don’t know about you and this Chen guy, Meiying…you’ve…been flaking out…and…”
“I’m sorry. It won’t happen again,” Meiying said softly.
Yun and Yang glanced at each other.
“All right…” Yang started. “Let’s just…take a week off. Then when you have an idea of how much time you’re going to be spending with Chen, let us know, and we’ll go back to the gallery when you’re free and look for the treasure…”
Meiying bit her lower lip. “You guys are angry, aren’t you?”
Yang feigned a smile. “Don’t worry. Just go home. Enjoy your date tomorrow.”
“Yun?”
The younger brother shrugged. “I don’t care anymore, man. Just do whatever you want to…”
