“How did your test go?” Yang asked.
Meiying smiled as she scanned her textbook. “I aced it.”
“As always,” Yang added.
They were at her place. Meiying had just finished school for the day, and Yang had just finished his shift at the market.
“Naturally.”
She was always good in school. She had graduated from high school with high honors. Yang remembered that she always came home with good test grades.
“Knock, knock!” Yun called into the place.
“Come on in!” Meiying called out.
Yun shortly joined them in the dining room, with bags of packed food. “Chun Li made some lunch after her last class, so she told me to bring some over.”
Yun had been helping at Chun Li’s martial arts school that morning. Meiying went to the kitchen to get some bowls and chopsticks.
“So how’s it going over there?” she asked.
Yun shrugged. “More students this time around. At this rate, she’s gonna have to hire some help…”
The three ate in silence for several minutes.
“Oh yeah! I didn’t tell you about my date,” Meiying said.
As if they needed to hear it.
“Okay…” Yang began, humoring her. “How did it go?”
“He’s such a gentleman,” she responded. “We had a great time…decent conversation…”
“So…this would be…boyfriend number twenty, right?” Yun teased.
“You always had trouble settling down…” Yang added.
Meiying pouted. “Hey…I just haven’t had much luck, okay?”
Yun laughed. “Isn’t that the truth?”
Meiying narrowed her eyes. “Like you’re one to talk. When was the last time you guys went on a date? If ever?”
Yang blushed. “Um…two years ago?”
“Two months ago! So there!” Yun retorted.
Meiying clicked her tongue. “You guys are so sad…”
“We got other things to do!” Yun argued. “Touring the world fighting isn’t the best way to meet girls, you know…”
“You guys aren’t interested in girls, anyway…” Meiying grinned. “One day, when I’m married, you guys will still be alone and single.”
“Who’d ever want to marry you?” Yun responded.
She smacked his arm. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Whoever marries you has gotta put up with a lotta crap,” Yun argued.
She narrowed her eyes.
Yang smiled slightly. Typical Yun and Meiying to start a heated discussion.
“Okay…” Meiying pulled out a map from her folder. “We’re going to the children’s park today, right?”
“As long as Yun doesn’t put us in the wrong area, again, I’d like to go…”
“I didn’t put us I the wrong part of town! It was a shortcut!” Yun insisted.
Meiying sighed. “Oh, for goodness sake…You never admit you’re mistakes. Because of that, you’re never gonna grow up…”
“Who says you’re right all the time?”
“Will you two be quiet?” Yang asked in a calm voice. “Let’s just go as soon as we’re done, okay?”
“So…” Meiying surveyed the park as they stepped through the gated entrance. “Looks like we have quite a search to do…”
“Let’s split up,” Yang suggested. “And we’ll meet back here in half an hour.”
“Sounds good,” Yun agreed.
Meiying headed north, Yang east, and Yun south.
Meiying’s section wasn’t an easy area to look around. There were many trees and bushes that she had to look around. She hoped the others were having better luck…
Yun tugged off his cap, smoothing his bangs back. Man, it’s hot, he thought. He surveyed the children’s playground. Suddenly a child came up, running into him.
“Hey, you all right?” Yun asked.
The little boy stared up at him with narrow eyes. “Get out of my way!”
Yun’s eyes widened. “Maybe you should watch where you’re going…”
“I was here first! You’re the fat slob who doesn’t know when to move away.”
Yun couldn’t believe the shrill voice of such a pint-sized kid. “Look, here, little guy, are you lost?”
“I said move!” He kicked him in the shin.
“What the-?!” Yun forced himself not to release a string of curses. “What the heck is wrong with kids these days?!”
Then he stomped on his foot.
“OW!”
He laughed at him, pointing. “What a stupid geek!”
The guy’s two friends were playing on the swingset nearby. They laughed at his expense as well.
Yun narrowed his eyes. “You little brat!”
The boy took off in a run, Yun chasing after him. All the while, Yun could hear the little boy’s mocking laughter.
“Come back here!” Yun shouted. “I’m gonna smack you upside the head!”
“HA-HA!” the boy responded.
Suddenly, the boy ran into a woman about seven years older than Yun.
“Sweetheart, you should watch where you’re going,” the woman told the boy.
“Ma’am, is this your son?” Yun asked.
The woman regarded him with cool eyes. “No, he’s my uncle, you half-twit. Of course he’s my son.” The boy clutched her hand. Yun nearly cringed. It was easy to see where the boy got his manners from. “I see…well…please make sure that he doesn’t run into anything. He ran into me, and he might run into something else and hurt himself.”
She glared at him. “Don’t tell me how to raise my child, you insignificant little worm. And how dare you call me ma’am. Do I look old to you?” she yelled.
“Well, you’re older than me, so…yeah…”
The boy began crying crocodile tears. “Mommy…he said he was going to beat me up…”
Yun’s jaw dropped. “Hey! You kicked me first! You should get spanked for that!”
The woman glared daggers at Yun. “You probably threatened him, and that’s why he kicked you.” She patted the boy’s head. “Good boy…you listen to what Mommy says.”
“I don’t believe this!” Yun exclaimed. “What kind of mother are you?!”
She slapped him. Hard. Yun reeled back in pain.
“There you are!” a cheerful, feminine voice piped up.
Yun opened his eyes and Meiying walked up, pulling at him arm. “Come on! Yang found something, so let’s go see what he found!”
The woman clicked her tongue. “See…he’s a bad man, honey,” she said loud enough for the other two to hear. “I don’t want you getting involved with cheap women like that…”
“Cheap?!” Meiying whirled around.
Yun groaned. “Oh no…”
“Who are you calling cheap?” she demanded, walking up to the woman.
“I didn’t say a thing,” she denied.
“Of course not…spoiled people are always so nice and kind.”
“I am not spoiled,” the woman denied, shoving Meiying’s shoulder.
“Hey!” Yun exclaimed.
Meiying shoved back.
“Hey!” Yun said again.
Meiying grabbed his hand. “Let’s go!” Then she took off running.
“Wait!” Yun called out. “Where are we going?”
“To see Yang,” Meiying answered. She stopped by the playground, producing a large purse wallet, one that he knew she never carried.
“Where did you get that?” Yun asked, in shock. At Meiying’s mischievous grin, his eyes gleamed. “You’re as bad as I am…” He pulled out a Gameboy…something he took from the boy no doubt.
Meiying laughed before turning to the children on the playground. “Hey kids…would you like some free stuff?”
Ten children gathered around as Meiying and Yun tossed the items into the sandbox.
In the distance, Yang sat high in a tree branch, shaking his head, a small smile on his lips.
“You two are too old to be playing tricks,” Yang commented as Yun and Meiying walked up to the base of the trunk.
“What are you talking about?” Yun said. “They deserved that.”
“Besides…they’ll get the stuff back,” Meiying responded.
In the distance, a boy’s shrill voice said, “That’s MY Gameboy!”
Another boy’s voice said, “Finders keepers, losers weepers, you wimp!”
“Just…not as easily,” Yun added.
Yang shook his head, then tossed a small box at Meiying. It looked very similar to the box they found at the plaza. Meiying opened the box and pulled out a small leather pouch. After releasing the strings on the pouch, she pulled out a small crinkled piece of paper.
“Not again…” Yun moaned. He looked up at his brother. “How did you find this?”
Yang pointed to the trunk, where a large X was carved into the wood.
“Well…easier than the last one…” Yun murmured.
As she unfolded it, something slipped out. Yun quickly snatched it from the air, holding it up. A gold charm dangled from a thin leather string. The charm was shaped like a wedge, similar to a portion of a circle.
Yang jumped down to examine it more closely. “Is that real gold?”
Yun turned it over in the sunlight, examining its luster and shine. “I think so…”
Yang glanced at Meiying. “What does the paper say?”
Meiying scanned the writing of characters. “It says that we have found the first piece of treasure. If we follow this map, we will find more…” She held up the map, which showed completely new landmarks of the city.
